Patrick took a deep breath and stepped into the crowded waiting room.

When he’d been paged, nearly twelve hours before, he hadn’t been expecting this. Mob shootings had become somewhat routine in his time in Port Charles, but what he found was anything but. What he’d found was all the major members of the Zacchara and Corinthos-Morgan mob organizations in the hospital emergency room, all critically injured. Since his arrival, he’d scrubbed in on or consulted on eight different patients, and not one of them had made it off the operating table.

And now, it was time to tell the families.

As soon as he stepped into the room, everyone jumped to their feet and started demanding answers.

Patrick held up a hand to silence them, and took a moment to study the group in front of him. Elizabeth Morgan and Lulu Spencer stood together, each lending the other their strength, their husband and fiancé’s feud temporarily forgotten. Kate Howard-Corinthos stood stoically by herself, resignation and hope evident on her face in equal measure. And Carly Corinthos held back by her mother and ex-father-in-law, looked ready to lose what was left of her sanity if this all end badly.

Which it was about to.

He readied himself to destroy their worlds. “There’s no easy way to say this,” he began. “So I’m just going to come out and say it. There were no survivors of the shoot out that took place tonight.”

In the instant that followed, it would have been possible to hear a pin drop.

The silence only lasted for a moment before it was broken by the sound of Carly wailing and screaming denials of “No”, all the while beating on Mike’s chest. Bobbie slipped quickly from the room to return moments later with a sedative that she injected into Carly. It calmed the yelling and the hitting, but not the sobbing. Mike and Bobbie guided her to a chair and tried to calm her further, but to no avail.

Kate sank down into the chair behind her, utterly silent, a blank expression on her face. The only sign that she’d heard what Patrick said, the constant worrying of her wedding rings.

Elizabeth and Lulu were hugging each other and weeping, far more quietly than Carly’s histrionics.

Patrick studied them all for a few minutes, noting the different ways the women were responding to their shared grief. He shook his head, amazed by how none of them, save maybe Kate, seemed to have understood that this was eventually going to happen.

It had only been a question of when.

“I’m sorry for your losses,” he said to the room at large, and turned on his heel to leave the waiting room.

No one noticed his exit.

Just outside the door stood Robin, waiting for him.

“How’d they take it?” she asked, her own grief etched onto her face.

Patrick looked down at his wife and reflected that if not for some of Robin’s choices, she might have been sitting in that waiting room herself. But then, the difference between her and them was that Robin had always known how their story would end.

“Patrick?” Robin prompted.

He shook his head to clear way his own reflections. “Like we expected, really.”

She nodded. “Well, Uncle Mac is going to announce it now and he wants you on hand to speak for the hospital.” She held out a hand and Patrick grasped it automatically, as they started down the hall to the front of the hospital where the press had gathered.

They joined Mac and the PCPD outside as Mac began to read his statement.

“At nine o’clock last night, a shootout between members of the Corinthos-Morgan and Zacchara mob organizations began. There were no survivors. At this time, I can announce the deaths of Sonny Corinthos, Jason Morgan, Johnny and Claudia Zacchara, Max and Milo Giambetti, Marcus Lewis, and David Johnson. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families. Any questions?”

Can't say I surprised.

As usual, this was awesome.

Really? Didja have to kill off Milo too? haha.

But excellent. I like a world where none of those people exist.

No questions. Man, if only we could lock Guza in a panic room anywhere, and throw away the key....

Getting rid of the mob would be the easiest thing in the world, and then, you could get back to the good stuff....

Nice.

Except that I cannot support the killing of Max, because he and Diane are just effing hilarious. But I do understand the reasoning. :P

It's true. Stray ends are messy.
